When we last left journalist Anita Story, she was sitting in the smoking section of a dinner. She was overhearing how this one young lady, a redhead, telling how she broke the news to her husband that she smoked.
The news was greeted by a night of sex.
Anita, who had never smoked, came somewhat equipped for this challenge.
Because she was assigned to cover a convention of late-blooming women smokers, she had purchased a pack of cigarettes just to get the male clerk's reaction.
She muffed opening the soft pack by tearing it completely open. She covered that up by buying a cigarette case and lighter.
She had completed writing her advance story on the late-bloomers and was having breakfast near her office.
She watched as the three women smoked away. The blonde had rather distinctive nostril exhales. The brunette blew perfect smoke rings. The redhead had developed a rather impressive French inhale.
Anita brought the cigarette up to her mouth and lit the cigarette. She carefully drew on the cigarette and let out a small amount of smoke. Then, she took another measured puff. Then another.
Then, as it always happens, her food came. She attempted to stub out her cigarette and save it. That failed and the cigarette broke.
Anita ate her breakfast of sausage and eggs. The waitress brought her some more coffee.
Like the trio at the other table, Anita lit another cigarette.
She attempted a nostril exhale and it burned her nose slightly. Smoke rings were a complete failure. The French inhale seemed to work. She needed to ask someone how it looked.
No one was there but Anita finished the cigarette drawing deeper and holding the smoke longer on each puff. She stubbed the cigarette out in a rather professional manner.
She bought some gum and chewed it. It help remove the cigarette taste.
She returned to her office and sat at her desk.
She tried to act as if nothing ever happened but other workers thought she looked like the cat that ate the canary.
More to come
