Young girls smoking in, and of, itself...?

Hello again Den,

Another moral/ethical aspect of all this that some might wish to entertain is whether showing young girls smoking will increase the incidence of other young girls smoking.

Personally, I'd think it probably would... However, I wouldn't think it'd do that very much. Basically, the reach of this media is likely insufficient to have much impact on young girls' smoking. But,... it would seem to promote cigarettes, and smoking amongst young girls, even if largely ineffectively, if for no other reason, simply because the media doesn't have the reach.

I can see how many people in our society today would be offended by seeing these young girls smoking... especially given the increased eroticization of smoking we've seen on the Internet in recent years. And children and sex is obviously highly taboo...

But, what's more, many would also presumably say that a child doesn't have an ability on par with an adult to mediate between their more animalistic impulses and rational facilities to make choices of possibly long-term, perhaps even grave, consequences in regards to cigarettes, and smoking... presumably because the rational-thinking ability may not have developed to an adult level... but, the animalistic impulses are as strong, if not stronger, than they'll be in adulthood.

I don't know... Getting beyond the perhaps obvious shocking revelation that I believe one can even think about such taboo subject matter, some who might claim to be the most "rational" amongst us might claim that smoking cigarettes can never be "rational"... for child, or adult. So,...

Nevertheless, the societal mores and folkways are clear. Children are not afforded the same rights,... nor the responsibilities as adults in our society. This appears to be a long-standing tradition in virtually all human societies I'm aware of... well, those of any record. (Correct me if this is, in fact, not largely accurate)

I guess much of this revolves around just how dangerous, "bad", or "horrible" someone might see cigarettes, and smoking as being... for whatever reasons. Evidently, there are some parents in our society who do not share what would appear to be the prevalent views seeing cigarette smoking as definitely NOT being for children.

Certainly this population of parents not sharing the prevalent views of cigarettes, and smoking definitely NOT being for children have rights too... well, even if they are seen as violating some important mores, and, as such, abducating any expectation of others respecting their own rights... every human being has rights. So, we all have some rights... even if, some have more, and some have less rights... whether this is seen as consequence of actions they've taken, their station in society, whatever. So, what are the rights, and/or privileges, that are afforded this group of people by society?

Which more clearly opens another can of worms in regards to these issues. That is, these people presumably have some speech rights too.

However, I believe it's sometimes illegal even to be in possession of certain material which depicts people performing certain illegal acts... particularly sex crimes, I believe.

I don't believe this material falls in this domain, however... but no, I'm not sure, and if societal mores continue to become increasingly anti-smoking, it's not difficult to imagine that this kind of material... may(!)... enter into this range of material that society considers sufficiently taboo to ban even simple possession.

Very few have responded to all this... yet, this subject matter certainly opens up a wide array of interesting, if not perhaps disturbing, moral/ethical issues.

Take care,
