Watson and Jo Ellen Jones are the parents of 15 children, all girls. To meet the entire family is difficult. They are spread into several states although most live in Henderson Valley.
Oldest is Anita, who lives in her hometown and is a bank clerk. Anita Phuff and husband James will be celebrating their fifth anniversary tonight. She heard the news of the the college closing by listening to the local radio station while on her way home from work.
Bernice, 26, is a minister in Kentucky and will be going to the airport later today for a return home in time for Sunday's church services. She was troubled by her mother's new smoking and was quick to say so.
Carlita, 25, is an accountant. She's single and also lives in Henderson Valley.
By now you've probably guessed that Watson and Jo Ellen have named their children alphabetically, according to the order of their birth.
For a time, the girls came every 14 months. The pace slowed toward the end.
Jo Ellen, who celebrates here 51st birthday today, was 39 when Opal, her final child was born on New Year's Day in 1990. Her last child was the first of the year for the community.
The other children will be introduced later as they become a part of the story. The 14 daughters present watched in amazement as their mother sent plumes of smoke into the air.
"I smoked in college before I met your daddy," Jo Ellen explained to her daughters. "I think I've earned the right to smoke but that doesn't mean any of you have permission to smoke."
Watson shared the amazement of his daughters as he watched his wife of almost 29 years smoke away. He remembered their meeting 30 years ago when Jo Ellen and some of her soriety sisters were celebrating her 20th birthday.
Jo and the other girls somehow made it to an all-night coffee shop where they will doing a poor job of making their alcohol consumption wear off.
They were so intoxicated that the manager of the coffee shop asked them to leave. That was a bad idea. The five girls who had somehow made it from an apartment to the coffee shop were in no shape to make it to the campus.
But Watson, who was up that night studying for a course at the seminary also in the town, volunteered to take the girls to their dorm. He planned to walk back three miles to his vehicle at the coffee shop.
So the six crammed into Jo Ellen's Volkswagen and headed for the soriety dorm. While is was no record for people in a small car, it was a tight squeeze with the tall and muscular Watson demonstrating his nobility for the girls.
Watson tolerated the smokey vehicle full of drunks. When they arrived at the campus the four girls piled out of the car. Watson, handed Jo Ellen the keys and made her promise not to take the car out again that night.
"How can I thank you," Jo Ellen asked. "The same way you thank any fraternity boy," Watson, the ministerial student said. He could see he said the wrong thing.
He laughed and said, "I mean go out on a date with me." "You would take a smoking soriety girl out," Jo Ellen said. "Well she won't be smoking on the date and after one date, she won't be smoking anymore."
Jo Ellen laughed and boasted, "After one date with this girl, you'll take her anyway you can get her." Sobering rapidly, Jo Ellen pitched her Winston out the window and gave Watson a kiss. "Now you know what hot lips are all about. Don't forget that preacher boy."
For the last 30 years, Watson's boast proved true. Jo Ellen never smoked again after that night.
But now Watson was watching his lovely wife smoke again and remembering well her words that night. Yes, he would take her anyway he could get her and yes, he remembered what hot lips were all about.
