Anita was both puzzled and relieved to see Bernice sitting at a table near the bar with a Diet Coke in front of her. Bernice had one hand on the drink and the other hand on the arm of a tall, handsome man. The man Bernice was with had when Anita was sure was a mixed drink.
Anita stopped motionless until Bernice glanced her way. "Come on over," Bernice said. "I've been busted. This is Jeff, Anita. Jeff Longfellow. He's my boyfriend back in Kentucky. He came to the airport to meet me. We got our signals crossed," Bernice said with a smile. "I thought he would meet me at the Louisville Airport but he's meeting me here and flying back."
"Oh," said the startled Anita. "I thought you had taken up drinking." Bernice responded with a no.
The she added: "I guess this is taking up day. Mom showed us she smoked again and with the weather out there I may need a stiff drink before I get on that airplane. Plus I'm praying for safe trips for Elaine and Debbie. And then a safe trip for all of you going home."
"Your mom smokes," jeff, new to the news, inquired.
"Yes, I guess," Bernice said. "They closed the college where she and dad work. Either they have to find another job in that little town or move. I can't imagine them ever moving. Dad build every bit of that house. Anyway mother was a college beauty and a pretty wild child until dad tied her down," Bernice explained. "With the closing of the college, she decided to go back to smokeing today."
"My gosh, how long has it been since she smoked," Jeff asked. "I think 29 or 30 years, right Anita." Anita, uneasy with the entire topic of smoking, shook her head in agreement.
"You don't smoke do you Jeff," Anita asked.
"No," said Jeff. "I would never drink around the congregation. Dad is a minister and we have to be an anti family."
"Have to be?" Anita asked.
"Well, it would not look good for mom to smoke in public," Jeff replied. Bernice had met Jeff's parents a couple of times and had never detected any sign of his mother smoking.
"Are you saying your mother is a closet smoker," Bernice said.
"Well, no closets at home but yes a closet smoker still," Jeff replied.
"I'm double baffled," Bernice said. "I never would have thought it."
"Wanna go for the hat trick," Anita asked.
"Hat trick?" Bernice asked
"Yes, I smoke too," the older sister said pulling a pack of Marlboro Lights out of her purse. "Just had one on the way back from parking the car. My habit is real light and I alway kept it down out of respect for mom and dad."
"Holy s, er Holy cow," Bernice said, "interrupting her original train of thought. I'm triple baffled."
Bernice never realized how baffled she would be before she and Jeff got on that plane.
