Family Smoking Epidemic: Part 6/Meanwhile at the house

(Here is the sixth chapter of the story of a family of emerging smokers. The first five parts are below starting with The Announcement on July 1, 2001. Hope you are enjoying them. Responses would be appreciated.)
While the older girls were absoring the news that not only had their mother returned to smoking after a long absence but also the fact that oldest sister Anita was indeed a smoker, Jo Ellen Jones, mother of 15 girls, was making plans for a surprise party at her home.
The event was the fifth anniversary of James and Anita Phuff. They planned to go out to dinner with the parents but Jo Ellen would have all family members hiding, ready to step out and yell surprise.
Jo Ellen used the lid of a jar for an ashtray for the first cigarette she smoked but quickly decided to acquire some ashtrays.
She asked Iris, her 18-year-old daughter, to go to the store and buy some ashtrays.
"I'll do nothing to feed your vile, evil habit," Iris said in true anti language. The job fell to little Jo Ellen, 17, and a dead ringer for her mother.
Jo Ellen was a junior in high school and Iris, a graduating senior. Iris was one of the few sisters who never participated in sports. Jo Ellen gave indications of being the best. Her favorite sister was May
Bee, 13, who had similar athletic abilities for her age. MB was an eighth grader.
They gladly took the car and went to the nearby Family Dollar. As they drove around the corner, Jo Ellen reached into her purse, opened a side zipper and produced a cigarette. She handed on to MB and both lit up.
"I thought I was going to die with mom smoking, Jo said as smoke exited her mouth and both nostrils. MB turned her head and let the smoke exit before speaking. "That's going to make it more difficult for us to do without a cigarette," she said.
"But look at it this way," replied Jo Ellen. "With mom smoking, we would have to worry about her smelling our breath."
"That's for sure," MB responded. "She seems to be a heavy smoker right from the start."
"It's not really a start," Jo Ellen said. "I know, but it's new to us," was M.B. reply. "It was even new to Anita," Jo Ellen said. "I wonder what they are dicsussing at the airport."
Back at the house, Jo Ellen, the mother, pulled another cigarette from her pack and drew a surprising response from Nancy, her seventh grader. "Can I light it for you, momma."
Jo Ellen thought and said yes. She recalled that she starting lighting her mother's cigarettes at age 11 although she had already started smoking with her older sister.
Nancy skillfully lit the cigaratte, held the smoke for a couple of seconds, leaned her head upward and let the smoke exit both nostrils. Her mom could barely gets the words out of her mouth before Nancy responded with a "No" as additional smoke left her mouth.
"So who all smokes," inquired Jo Ellen. "Well Little Jo," the name for Jo Ellen's namesake, "and MB smoke too." Nancy volunteered.
"Is that all," asked Jo Ellen. "That's all," said Nancy. "Isn't that enough."
"Yeah, its too many," the mom said. "It'll be a cold day in hell before I let you smoke before your 18, young lady." Nancy was startled by her mother's choice of words. "Yes, man," she said.
"Don't tell anybody about this conversation," Jo Ellen said. "Don't tell the other two. I'll see how long it takes them to tell me. If I could figure it out before, I'll never figure it out later," Jo Ellen said through a talking exhale.
(Coming up: The college girls of Watson and Jo Ellen deal with the shock of the announcement and the prospects of transferring to another college while the older girls await the airport arrival of Debbie and the departure of Bernice).
