It had been a few weeks since Robert’s funeral, and not many people had heard from Anita. Anita lit up a cigarette, and took a deep drag. She just stayed in bed, and let time go by. She took time off from work, and just let herself go. Her apartment was filthy, and filled with smoke. The phone rang and Anita let the answering machine pick it up.
“Hey this is Robert and Anita, we’re out, so leave us a message, and some money, and we’ll get back to you”
Beep.
“Hi, this is Lisa. Um, I just need to talk to you.” “If you could call me or come over that would be great, thanks.”
Anita listened, and realized that she needed to help. She cleaned up, grabbed her key, and a couple of packs of cigs, and went over to Lisa’s.
The doorbell rang, and Lisa answered.
“Hi Anita, come on in.” Lisa said.
Lisa looked bad. Anita had met her on some occasions, and she always looked like the lost Brady kid. Even at the funeral she looked great, but now, she looked just bad. Anita sat down, and Lisa brought her some coffee, and a plate for an ashtray. Anita was taken back, since Lisa was so against smokers. Anita lit up, and took a drag. Lisa burst into tears. She started telling Anita about how after her parents died Robert took care of her. This had been so hard, and nothing seemed right anymore. Anita thought about how much she had been going through, and how she seemed to ignore everyone else. Anita and Lisa just talked. Anita told her that they should go out tonight, because that’s what Robert would have wanted.
Anita picked up Lisa, and took her to Custer’s. She told her how this is where she first met Robert, and how great he was. Anita ordered two drinks, but Lisa said told her that she didn’t want anything. Anita talked her into it, and Lisa took a drink. Lisa was a little taken back by it, but took another sip. Anita just smoked her head off, and talked about all the great times her and Robert had. After a couple of drinks Lisa was gone. Anita decided to keep an eye on her, and drove back to her own apartment. Anita put her in her bed, and Anita had another cigarette, and crashed on the couch. The next day Anita woke up to the sound of the vacuum cleaner. Anita looked around and saw Lisa cleaning up the whole place. Lisa told her how she woke up early, and just decided to help out, but only if they could go out again. Lisa and Anita went back to Custer’s and Lisa ordered the drinks, and Anita smoked her cigarettes. Lisa told her how she never liked smokers, because she always read all the reports on the harm it can do to you. Anita told her that she read the same reports, but enjoyed the taste, and feeling smoking gave her. Anita offered one to Lisa, but Lisa refused. Lisa had more drinks that night, and once again stayed at Anita’s. The routine stayed like this for the next week. Every night they would go out, and every night she would stay over.
It was on a Tuesday morning, and Lisa had woken up to the smell of cigarette smoke. Anita always slept in longer then her, and had smoked about four cigarettes before going to bed. Lisa had gotten used to the smell, and was very surprised by it. She went into the kitchen, to start breakfast, and saw a pack of Marlboro Lights just sitting there. Lisa chuckled at the thought of having one. She had changed a little. She had started to drink, so what could trying a cigarette hurt. She just stared at them, and reached for one. Just as her hand was about to grab it, Anita walked in, grabbed the cigarettes, lit up, and took a deep morning drag. Lisa stopped, watched Anita, and thought about what she almost did.
